Supported by BU School of Theatre’s New Play Initiative, I will be workshopping my one-person show as part of this six-week project featuring two other plays-in-progress (are you ready to smash white things? by Ireon Roach and Fabric by Jo Mercado). The First Pineapple and Other Folktales employs mediums from TED Talk and spoken word to rap, puppetry, and more to explore what it means to tell one’s stories. Directed by Sophronia Vowels.

Boston University Summer Theatre Institute (BUSTI)

Departing from over five years working with students ages 5-18 at Acting For Young People’s Summer Camp at George Mason University, I spent hot girl summer at BUSTI. As a teaching assistant, I supported the amazing faculty and staff of this five-week conservatory experience for highly motivated high school theatre artists, in addition to creating a four-course Experimental Theatre Lab sequence.

Community Involvement for Qui Nguyen’s Vietgone at Company One Theatre

Asian American Theatre Artists of Boston (AATAB) hosted Vietgone at the Gate: a FREE Open Mic on Saturday, May 4 from 2pm-4pm at the Boston Chinatown Gate as part of our community involvement work with C1’s production. Check out photos here!

Bluets: A Lecture In Six Fugues

Michael played the LECTURER in this new stage adaptation of Maggie Nelson’s book. Below is a synopsis from Erica, the adapter and director:

“A Lecturer addresses an audience about the color blue—its philosophy, its implications, its science, and its many victims. But the Lecturer may not have as much control as they believe. Bluets is a look inside a single blue mind, where many blue creatures—including the audience—wait to be found.”

This Is Not A True Story Staged Reading

Michael produced and co-directed a staged reading of Preston Choi’s This Is Not A True Story with Audrey Seraphin. The free event, hosted by Asian American Theatre Artists of Boston (AATAB) and API Arts Network, included food and drink from Chinatown’s Double Chin Restaurant and a post-show conversation with the artists. Dragon Cycle at American Repertory Theatre

3/21 - 4/7 (extended!)

Michael Assistant Directed Sara Porkalob’s Dragon Cycle, which was part of the A.R.T Breakout series at OBERON. The cycle currently consists of two one-woman shows centering Sara’s mixed, Filipino, immigrant, poor, Black, queer family. For tickets and more information, click here. Sara has been commissioned to write the third and final installment of the Cycle, a musical featuring a cast of ten people titled Dragon Baby.

Sense of Space

Michael concluded his collaboration in Corianna Moffatt’s MFA Theatre Education Thesis on Friday, March 8 with a Q&A in the BU College of Fine Arts’ Commonwealth Gallery. This project was an innovative devising process looking at the relationship between theatre artists and public spaces at Boston Medical Center and Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program.
